Our Unique Sibling Reviews
True to our mission of bridging Hollywood to New York, we place special focus on adaptions of films to books. Our advance reviews of books tend to focus on books that have “film potential” and will inevitably make their way to the big screen. Our film reviews focus on both the current films AND book to film adaptaions.
Our unique SIBLING REVIEWS feature–as far as we know entirely unique to Films and Books Magazine–is the ultimately expression of our misson. In these features, we give a graded review of the book that inspired a current release film, and the film itself. Which is better? Where did the film fail to capture the nuances of the book? Don’t miss our unique SIBLING REVIEWS.
Films and Books Reviews Commercial Entertainment
Films and Books is focused on commercial entertainment and will review advance galleys (pre release), advance screenings as well as already released books, movies and DVDs.
Review Editor Karen Moyers assigns reviews to authors, a key difference. Most of our reviewers are published authors and screenwriters.
The OTHER Reviewers
Just for sport and fun, we try, where possible, to offer a synopsis of other reviews from other authorities at the bottom of our reviews. But remember:
Subjective Opinions
A reader or movie-goer should always remember that a review is one person’s opinion. A book or movie may get reviewed as a Must-Read here and as a pass somewhere else. A literary review magazine may give a starred review to a notworthy novel which might only receive a FAIR READ here. Why? Because we’re focused on commercial entertainment and fun. And because we are people, just as they are, with opinions. Always weigh and balance multiple opinions if making a purchase decision based on any review.
Comment on Reviews
We encourage you to post your own reviews on a title by commenting on the actual review or going to the Book Chat or Film Chat and posting your own review. We believe all opinions matter.
Our Ratings
Films and Books ratings always include this scale: MUST READ or MUST SEE, EXCELLENT READ or EXCELLENT SEE, GOOD READ or GOOD SEE, FAIR READ or FAIR SEE, PASS ON THIS (in our opinion – get others!).
The summary rating looks like this:
REVIEW RECOMMENDATION: MUST SEE
In addition, optionally, our reviewers have embraced the approach of the movie production company in evaluating scripts, rating the following from 1 to 10 with 1 being very poor and 10 being near perfect (nothing’s perfect, right?):
Premise and Originality: x out of 10
Characterization: x out of 10
Dialogue: x out of 10
Storyline: x out of 10
Clearly, this reflects our focus on the elements of commercial entertainment.
