In 1992 Gore’s title Earth in the Balance was published by Houghton Mifflin and in 2008 he will release The Path to Survival.

The Award was in honor of his work in making the world aware of climate change issues. His film An Inconvenient Truth won the academy award this year. 800,000 books are already in-print and Gore’s publisher Rodale has decided to go back to the press with special “award” stickers.

The Film — An Inconvenient Truth
The film, released by Paramount Vantage, drew $49 million in worldwide box offices, documenting his decades-long mission to educate people on issues such as global warming.

The movie is anecdotally credited with improving their environmental consciousness and measurably contributed to awareness of recycling, hybrid cards and alternate power.

The much anticipated Hanibal Rising is floundering in 3000 theatres against “biting” criticism. Although the original Silence of the Lambs opened to similar box office receipts of $13 million, it quickly gained popularity and earned a total of $130 million, setting up a very popular franchise. Also, Silence of the Lambs opened to just over $7,000 per theatre, versus $4400 for Hannibal Rising.

Hannibal (the sequel to Silence of the Lambs) took $265 million and Red Dragon dropped to 92 million, perhaps because of the smaller role of Anthony Hopkins. Is Hopkins the secret to success?

Early reviews are good. But, the marketing for Mel Gibson’s “Apocalypto” is erratic and unsettled.

Apocalypto will open on more than 2,500 screens on Dec. 8 — an increase in the original plans due to solid buzz.

Much of the marketing is low key, focused on native American themes, with the initial screenings on first nations and no Hollywood premier. Disney is pushing the Native American audiences, with other screenings focused on Latin Americans.

Disney finally concluded this week to submit to all branches of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.

Although Gibson appears at charity launches and on the cover of magazines, Disney is focused on movie audience buzz, rather than film-maker connection. The target audiences niche towards younger because “It’s an action genre film,” said Gibson’s publicist Alan Nierob. Younger audiences will probably cheer on the extreme violence.
