The Best Film of 2009: "Up in the Air"

“Best in Film” Each Year: A Series

By Jessica Lyric

• Introduction to “Best in Film” series

There were a lot of great movies in 2009. From the instant classic comedies ‘The Hangover’ and ‘I Love You, Man’ to the great love stories of ‘(500) Days of Summer’ and ‘Away We Go’ and new lens of war in ‘The Hurt Locker’ and ‘Inglorious Basterds’.

Up in the Air

However, for my money there was no better film than Jason Reitman’s story of a man willing to accept a life of distance because he chooses to maintain his own illusion. It was not flashy or heart-pounding in its story, but it spoke to our times of upheaval and self-imposed solitude. It made me reconsider the world around me, and isn’t that what great cinema is supposed to do?

  • The Oscar went to…’The Hurt Locker’
  • #1 at the box office: ‘Avatar’
