“Best in Film” Each Year: A Series

They may have given the Oscar to ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, but no film was a bigger game-changer than ‘The Dark Knight’. I loved the originality of ‘Vicky Christina Barcelona’, ‘Religulous’ and ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ and they will continue to make me laugh for years to come, but they did not reinvent a long-despised genre. ‘The Reader’ allowed my favorite actress to further explore her range while ‘Milk’ gave voice to an important, but somewhat over-looked leader, with a great performance by Sean Penn, but neither allowed an actor to surprise and mystify with their work.
‘The Dark Knight’ showed the world what millions of loyal comic readers have long known: superhero stories can be dark, powerful and important. Heath Ledger’s Joker set a new standard for antagonists, not just villains, that will be remembered for generations. It may have been over-looked by the Academy, as a film, but it will be the film that all other adaptations will emulate from now on.
- The Oscar went to…’Slumdog Millionaire’
- #1 at the box office: ‘The Dark Knight’
