The Best Film of 2007: "Knocked Up"

“Best in Film” Each Year: A Series

By Jessica Lyric

Introduction to “Best in Film” Series

2007 was a great year for film and yet for some reason, the big prize went to the over-rated ‘No Country for Old Men’. I don’t get the appeal of this movie (other than Javier Bardem) and have long debated its merits, so let’s move on.

During the Oscar race, the was hellbent on fighting for ‘There Will Be Blood’ to win best picture, and though I still think it is a better film (by far) than ‘No Country’, I never really believed it to be the best picture of the year. If I am going to be totally and completely honest here, I have to say that my favorite film of 2007 was ‘Knocked Up’. I know it wasn’t the most stunning visuals, but the honesty of the writing was something truly refreshing to see on screen. Katherine Heigl has since stated that she believed the women in the film to be shrill and uninteresting, but I beg to differ. I think Heigl, Leslie Mann, Kristen Wiig and Charlyne Yi bring heart to a film that could have been just another man-semble.

I loved ‘Once’, ‘Juno’ and ‘Atonement in 2007, but the film I will continue to watch for years to come is ‘Knocked Up’.

  • The Oscar went to…’No Country for Old Men’
  • #1 at the box office: ‘Spider-man 3’
