The Best Film of 2006: "Children of Men"

“Best in Film” Each Year: A Series

By Jessica Lyric

• Introduction to “Best in Film” series

A great year for cinema. ‘The Departed’ took home the gold and though I loved it, it is not my pick. Instead I will go with a film that I continue to recommend to any and everyone I meet: Children of Men.

This film haunted me and stirred something within me. The cinematography was brilliant, and coupled with a genius idea, great performances and a well-developed story allowed for the most over-looked film in recent years. It was directed by one of my modern favorites: Alfonso Cuaron, a brilliantly inventive auteur.

My second place finish would go to, funnily enough, another Clive Owen film: ‘Inside Man’ for allowing Spike Lee to amaze me all over again. This year also gave us some amazing performances: the great debut of Jennifer Hudson in ‘Dreamgirls’, the reinvention of Will Ferrell in ‘Stranger Than Fiction’, the greatest work to date by Penelope Cruz in ‘Volver, and Helen Mirren’s transformation into ‘The Queen’. It also gave us great new concepts like the multiple cross-related worlds of ‘Babel’, the bizarre pseudo-documentary comedy of ‘Borat’, and the frightening imagination of ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’. I rocked out to ‘Dave Chappelle’s Block Party’ and was terrified of ‘The Descent’. A great year.

  • The Oscar went to…’The Departed’
  • #1 at the box office: ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest’
