The Best Film of 2003: "Lost in Translation"

“Best in Film” Each Year: A Series

By Jessica Lyric

• Introduction to “Best in Film” series

All in all, not a great year for film. This was the year those two horrible ‘Matrix’ movies came out, after all, as well as ‘Gigli’. However it did bring several of my favorite films. Yes, we almost all love ‘Kill Bill Vol. 1’, which began the reinvention of Tarantino, however from 2003 I love the over-looked ‘The Station Agent’, the under-rated ‘Down With Love’, the great horror of ‘Cabin Fever’ and the strangely lovely ‘All The Real Girls’. More than all those, though, was ‘Lost in Translation’. A stunning film about loneliness, the disappointment of achievement, and searching for some truth amongst all the bullshit. I love this film for its stillness as well as the career-defining work by Sofia Coppola, Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. The Oscar may have gone to ‘Return of the King’, but my soul is in ‘Translation’.

  • The Oscar went to…’The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King’
  • #1 at the box office: ‘The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King’
