The Best Film of 2002: "Bowling for Columbine"

“Best in Film” Each Year: A Series

By Jessica Lyric

• Introduction to “Best in Film” series

He is a divisive figure, to be sure, but when he’s good he is the best. When the heroes of a generation were being blamed for the actions of a few, Moore turned the blame back on society in this groundbreaking and immeasurably important film. He allowed publicly misunderstood figures like Marilyn Manson, Trey Parker and Matt Stone to speak up for their followers. He also used humor and gravitas to reveal the truth behind the loneliness of the young. It was a daring and charged film that asked questions no one else had the guts to ask.

I also loved the Oscar winner, Chicago, with the exception of Catherine Zeta-Jones stealing Bebe Neuwirth’s role; it was a close second for this year. It was a year of auteurs, proved not just by Moore but by Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze bringing the amazing ‘Adaptation’ into being, Alexander Payne’s ‘About Schmidt’, Pedro Almodovar’s ‘Talk To Her’, and P.T. Anderson’s ‘Punch-Drunk Love’. They all made amazing films, but this was Moore’s best.

  • The Oscar went to…’Chicago’
  • #1 at the box office: ‘Spider-man’
