The Best Film of 2001: Lovely and Amazing.

“Best in Film” Each Year: A Series

By Jessica Lyric

• Introduction to “Best in Film” series

This is a hard year to call. I know for certain that the Academy choosing ‘A Beautiful Mind’ was one of the worst decisions of all time, but here my heart is torn. I remember at the time fighting for ‘In The Bedroom’, but all these years later I can’t remember why. Certainly ‘Amelie’ and ‘Moulin Rouge!’ were great but they relied more on art direction than cinematic significance. I love ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch’ for the change it promised to bring and ‘Ghost World’ for the originality of character. ‘Donnie Darko’ will always be loved by the cult side of me, ‘Gosford Park’ was an embarrassment of riches and ‘Kissing Jessica Stein’ charms me to this day.

Thus I am left with a close race between ‘Y Tu Mama Tambien’, ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’, and ‘Lovely and Amazing’. I stop to think and must admit that the film that had the most impact on me was Nicole Holofcener’s over-looked film about the insecurities of women and the fragility of their relationships to one another. This film showed me honest women I could relate to for the first time and so it wins out over the style of ‘Tenenbaums’ and the passion of ‘Tambien’.

  • The Oscar went to…’A Beautiful Mind’
  • #1 at the box office: ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’
