“Best in Film” Each Year: A Series
• Introduction to “Best in Film” series
Just because I love Ang Lee does not mean I will pick ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ as the best film of 2000. It was a great achievement, but no means the pinnacle of that year. I will certainly not choose the Oscar-winning ‘Gladiator’, the only good thing about that movie was Joaquin Phoenix. Instead my choice is
Cameron Crowe’s story based on his experiences as a teen writer for Rolling Stone in the 70’s. It is a mesmerizing film and the only film I like to think that Kate Hudson has done. A great cast and a fresh perspective on a heavily documented period of history.
Close behind in my favor are Steve Soderbergh’s ‘Traffic’, The Coen Brothers’ ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’. Karyn Kusama’s ‘Girlfight’, Christopher Guest’s ‘Best in Show, and Danny Boyle’s ‘The Beach’. However my true second place goes to the mind-bending ‘American Psycho’ which was an early prediction of just how awesome Christian Bale could be.
- The Oscar went to…’Gladiator’
- #1 at the box office: ‘The Grinch’
